Burruses given ARA’s highest award

The Association of Rice Alumni has named C. Sidney Burrus '57, '58, '60, and Mary Lee Burrus recipients of its 2007 Gold Medal for service to the university, the highest award given by the ARA.

Sidney Burrus is Maxfield and Oshman Professor Emeritus of Engineering. He served as dean of engineering from 1998 to 2005, director of the Computer and Information Institute from 1992 to 1998, and chair of the ECE Department from 1984 to 1992. Mary Lee Burrus worked for 10 years in Alumni Affairs, and together the couple served as masters of Lovett College from 1972 to 1978.

The Gold Medal recognizes Rice alumni, faculty, staff, or friends who have rendered extraordinary service to the university. Each recipient must demonstrate one or more of the following criteria: outstanding service in promoting the ideals of the founder of the university, unusual dedication to and advancement of the academic excellence of the university, or uncommon generosity of time and means in support of the university.

The ARA also honored engineering alumnus Richard O. Wilson ’52, ’56 and his wife, Mary Ellen, who received the 2007 Meritorious Service Award.
