Spring 2007 Wrap-up!

I am pleased to be sending you the second edition of news from the George R. Brown School of Engineering. It has been a busy semester! In this issue you will notice we have stories of the many honors and awards given to our faculty, students, and staff. All of this demonstrates that the excellence of the School of Engineering is recognized within the University and well beyond.

In January I took a trip to India with President Leebron. We visited several universities and met with public officials and alumni there. It was a most interesting and productive trip. Afterward we had a conversation with a Rice News reporter, which is excerpted in this issue. This trip reflects new directions for the University and engineering at Rice, just as the construction of the Collaborative Research Center, also covered in this issue, reflects new directions for us with the Texas Medical Center. Another new direction, this one in engineering education, is covered in the story about Rice's first interdisciplinary minor in Financial Computation and Modeling.

I'd like to draw your attention to the story on the engineering competition held during National Engineers Week in February. This was the first year of the contest, and it was such a success that we look forward to holding it next year and in the years to come. More than 40 teams of three students each competed for cash prizes. Their creativity and enthusiasm in tackling the problem posed by Fluor Corporation, one of the event sponsors, made the contest a lot of fun.

I would like to invite our alumni to keep up with news and events in the School of Engineering by signing up for my weekly message. Each Monday during the academic year, I send out an email message to all faculty, staff and students announcing the achievements, activities, awards and honors of the past week plus a calendar of all events within the school for the current week. If you would like to receive this weekly update, please send a message to engrnews@rice.edu and ask to be added to the email list.

I hope you enjoy reading this edition of Rice Engineering News. Please send comments and suggestions to engrnews@rice.edu.

Have a great summer, and we'll see you again in the fall.

Sallie Keller-McNulty
William and Stephanie Sick Dean of Engineering
