Welcome to Engineering news from Rice!

The George R. Brown School of Engineering is a community of students, faculty, researchers, and staff who put their efforts each day to learning, teaching, discovering, and supporting the work that is Rice’s considerable contribution to the field of engineering and its future. Our community also includes those who have received engineering degrees from Rice since the University was founded in 1912. Countless numbers of these alumni have made major contributions in engineering. Holders of engineering degrees from Rice are leaders in universities, schools, government labs, and industries around the world. And many of our graduates return to campus regularly to participate in the teaching, learning, discovering, and supporting that make Rice the unique university that it is. Even after more than a year as Dean of Engineering, I am still so impressed with the quality of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and of the influence they have on our university, our city, and on society as a whole. I feel privileged to be associated with this outstanding community and this great university.

In this first issue of Engineering News from Rice, we report on some of our most recent successes. We tell about exciting new research in digital signal processing, HIV research, and computational math for controlling NASA’s space shuttle. We introduce our new faculty and four new professors in the practice. We highlight student and faculty awards, staff activities, and alumni contributions to the life of the school of engineering. I hope you enjoy reading about the many accomplishments of our community.
